The Encounter post Production

The scenario of the project of the encounter is that everyone has to make a short little scene and the title of it is called the 'encounter' but what what needs to be included in the scene is match on match action,180 degree rule, rule of thirds and a variety if different types of shots and angles what else needs to be included in our project is that a match on match action of a door opening and a talking sequence (preferably using the two shot technique)of two people talking about anything which also involves a chair, but you we can choose how we want it.

With the encounter we have tried to make it follow the set of rules and guidelines as much as possible but also giving our own taste and spin on it to make it very different and creative as possible as previous years before us have shown very linear work that follow a very generic pattern that shows little creative desire. Were taking all the techniques and rules that the brief requires us to have such as match on match action and a door being used and a chair and a conversation, but what we have is instead of following a basic teacher in the classroom talking scene like the previous years we have made it into a confrontation between two 'gangs' with 4 people in total.

Our story is about two gangs that are in the school and have a rival stand off and they confront each other but it escalates and all with in this is the required parts of the encounter brief. The places that we intend on filming is in the school and to be specific the corridors by the media department and we may include the stairs by the business block if needed and any room for example 65 would be the encounter room where the 'talking' sequence would begin. The strengths of this is it is easy access to rooms and buildings which isn't  an issue and it is also very familiar to us, but the negatives our that it is also partly generic as everyone practically films in the school and the area is not as big as we wanted as there is a partial fight scene in our version of the encounter.

During the fliming of the encounter we have tackled many issues and problems along the way,and one of these challenges was the use of techniques but il continue this on later. The techniques used during the filming of our version of the encounter was the 180 degree rule.match on match action and the rules of thirds.

What the 180 degree rule is when a camera focuses on for exmaple two people and stays on that side of the two people talking and the camera can't move over or change sides during a continious scene, the only way it will change is when the scene changes to a completely different shot, the reason why this is,is because it avoids confusion for the audience and makes it seem more fluent,This was used when Faheem first encounter person B.Another key technique that was used during our production was match on match action so when Faheem opened dropped his bottle the bottle falling towards the ground was continious in two different shots making it match on match action.

The other technique that was used was the rules of thirds,so throughout our filming we tried our best to keep the eye level of all our actors at a third from the top of the screen, there are times when this doesn't apply to show show inscurerity to some scenes(such as Faheem on the floor with Maria looking down on him  both of their eye levels are at different levels so this rule couldn't be applied, but the reason why in media we use this is because it feels natural for the eye level to look at that height and it fills in any uneccassary space.

In our version we used all the techniques as possible and used some more than others for instance we used a lot of match on match action we used this on the bottle scene when Faheem (person A) drops the bottle onto the ground and the scene switches to it when it is in mid fall.Another place we have used it was when he sprint off down the corridor and when he got hit by the chair, and there is many more, and the reason why we choose this is was because it makes the scene less stale and more ingaging and adds a more of an action feel.We also used the rule of thirds most of the time if we didn't use it ,then it was because we couldn't due to filming complications or scarfice it to make the shot work.We also did use shot reverse shot but there was some errors towards the end of our version.

The strengths and weaknesses of our project of the encounter are noitcable in many areas for instance when filming the encounter we had to get the right people and have the same timetable as them so there wouldn't be any conflict with filming it also when filming some people found it hard to understand what we ment or what we wanted them to preform so it was long and frustrating to get our vision across to them.Another thing was when there was a lot of vibration during running sequences or fighting it would vibrate the camera making it look very shaky and bad,but the big problem that we had to combat was the errors of filming for example,we accidently didn't record the real scenes as we were recording the setup instead and we didn't realize when it came to record the real act, that we paused it thinking it was recording resulting in not having the footage.

Only when we realized was when we was in the editing room and we had to improvise and cut and redisgn the ending, resulting in person D's part to be completely be removed. The positives of our filming was how creative our version was when compared to the other groups as we had fight scenes and just a overall more creative dynamic feel to it,what else was good about it was all the characters were my mates so it was easy for us to get along with and get it done reasonably and fairly quick. In the future I will prevent the errors by watching over the footage once taken to make sure we have all the footage and make sure there are little to no vibrations at all to make the footage look good.
