From what i have learnt this week about title devices is that they have a large importance of a film and the job they provide is mentioning and naming the people and companies that helped invest into a film or produce the film and star in the film. For instance Marvel which is one of the companies i have analysed and Film four productions both are mentioned in the intro and in the opening sequences of the films they helped invest or produced. The titles name actors that have been in the films and usually the actors that have been payed the most money have their name mentioned first, and most of the time the director of the film is usually mentioned last of the title credits, either after or before the films title. The style of the graphics can reflect the themes and mood of the film for instance they can look very dark and eerie to represent a horror film or they can be bold and bright to represent a happy and exciting film which is very good technique to present an atmosphere to the audience.

 

This will impact my production on my film because i will make my BSR film have a somewhat dark and decrepit feel which will be represented through graphics and the film that is playing, the graphics will also be super imposed graphics which is when text appears above footage of a film. I will also mention everyone who had helped in the production of my film and mention any other essential information such as the title as well in my film. I may use a smash mouth opening which is when the opening footage goes straight into some action which gets the audience very hyped and excited and makes the film more interesting to watch and helps engage the audience more as well, this is used i the film called Deadpool but it has a slight twist which is that it has a slow motion element in it which allows the audience to see the whole environment and it also establishes the themes and characters within two minutes. I will also use other methods such as maybe some silence or music playing to portray some real harsh emotion and make it as much realistic as possible which is our ultimate goal since its a BSR film and making the film as enjoyable and realistic as possible is essential.

What are Film Four Productions?

Film Four Productions is a film company that was made and founded in 1982.The company produces films and its owned by channel which is its parent company who exhibits the film.Film four is behind some of the most well known and significant British films in the last 20 years.film four doesn't distribute the films another branch called film four distributor, distributes the films on DVD to shops and markets across the country and other ways of media.Film four also has partnerships with Sky and virgin, the leading film broadcasters of tv in the Uk.

The parent company for Film Four is called channel four who is in charge of film four and also gives them guidance and support for any projects that film four needs help with.Channel four is also in control of management and and helps in influencing with board directors and film four is a subsidiary of channel four.Channel four also holds most of the voting stock of film four.They are a tv channel were they exhibit a range of films and shows that are just released. 

The parent company doesn't just own film 4,the own various other companies too.For instance they own a company called More 4 which is a digital television channel which was launched in 10 october 2005.Another company is E4 which is also a digital television channel that is funded by advertising and the 'E' in E4 stands for entertainment and they have a primary audience at aged 15-35 year olds. Finally they also own 4seven which was apparently made due to a response of viewers missing out on shows because there was so much choice.

Since Film four is owned by the parent company, Channel Four, it does gain in advantages of their films being owned by channel four.For instance when the films are in pre-production or production channel four would help and invest into those films which would give film four more access to facilities and equipment.Another bonus is that film four also gain a boost in popularity since channel four have fairly huge base audience, they will exhibit their films which will increase their viewership.It also allows film four to take new ideas and try new things as they have the budget to try, if they were separate they wouldn't always have that option.

Film Four has partnered with the BFI also known as the British film institute and their aim is to help promote new actors and filmmakers in a business. Film four has partnered with them to help find new people such as directors and actors for their new upcoming films that they will produce.This helps people start new careers and also helps a new generation of people start in the film world.This is also a clear representation of people being accepted to the big film industry helping people to aspire to them and be like them.

What do Film Four produce?

Film Four has made many films over the years and they have made some fairly well known films too.Usually the company aims to fund around 20 films a year.These films can range from all sorts of types such as sci-fi and even Dramas.This amount of films that they fund is an advantage as it increases the viability.This also increases their footprint in the film industry as they have many films they have made and this can help make them more known in the industry.

Film Four do fun themselves with the support of other companies such as channel. They also do support other external companies to help them get started in the film industry. For example they helped an American independent film makers.Which shows not only interest in British film makers but also international as well shows can help them in the future is they need any more partners to work with or any new talent that they are ambitiously aiming for

Film Four has had some fairly successful films over the years but there's one film that stands out of the rest that made film four very successful, the films called Ex-Machina.The film had a
budget of $15million and had grossed over $36.9million, this made this film critically acclaimed by he national board of review as one of the top 10 best independent films of the year. The film also went one to wind more than 88 academy awards and it was honored the film with the best visual effects.This helped to boost film fours popularity and income by a dramatic rate which would serve to help future projects that they will make.

Film Four makes a lot of films since they make a lot they have also fun them and this means the budget for each film will be less if theres more films planned to be made.Usually film four contribute to around 15-15% of a films budget.They invest around about $500,000 for their films and the rest of the money is supported by other companies and channel four since they are the parent company. In 2002 channel four did cut its budget of $30million to $10million due to mounting losses.

Film Four are a very creative and diverse company that have existed for a decent amount of time but one thing they are known for and have built a reputation for is BSR films. They have contributed so much into the BSR film industry as a lot of the films they produce and make are BSR films. They have made a film called 'The Selfish Giant' which has a very dark and gloomy story which basically all BSR Films are about or contain within them. They have also made a BSR called 'this is England' which was too very successful at the time of its release.

Since they are a film company that has a very large presence in the BSR industry, but they do also have a foothold in over markets too.Which helps broaden their viewership and helps them spread out to different interest's other than the same stuff. They have made Science fiction films such as 'Ex-Machina' which was a big success for them, they have also made a film called '12 years a slave' which is about slavery and racism showing the true horrors of real life and 'The killing of the sacred deer' that is set in the past. This can all validate their reliability and that they do have inquisitiveness's in other genres.
 

Where is the company based?

 Film Four are company that was made and created in the Uk, and they primarily film in the Uk aswell.They do mainly fund their films Uk but they do go aborad to other countries to film what is necasary for their film.They rarely alos do fun their films in Other countires such as America but they tend not do due to their films mainly filmed in the Uk since its based around British lives.Its not just the Uk they fund out epsecially if the films mainly set out in another country for instance 'American honey'

Just stated above film four don't just fund their films in the Uk and they are also helping fund the BFI so they are looking for new talent all the time.Since this is the case they are helping Filmmakers internationally aswell to help kickstart or fund their films which is a good thing for these independant companies.One company they helped to fund a film called 'American Animals'.This is a great thing and helps inspiring people start up a film production and get into the world of film.

 

Since Film Four made the film called Ex-machina that i explained above it did have various film locations that were set in many places.They filmed in the Uk such as Buckinghamshire but for some scenes they also went to Bloomberg for the offices enviroments.Through out of the film they filmed in Norway and such as the Valldal, Which is a very beautiful location.There was also scenes in the film of the Juvet Landscape which is sureal to many people which is where Nathans mountain retreat scene occurs.

Why is the company Important to the Uk film industry

Film Four Productions has an ethos and they want to help invest in many films that they make and many other companies too such as the independant ones.They also want to help support international companies and co-invest and innovate in interesting foriegn films.They offor a platform for British independant cinema on terrestrial television.They distruibute one of their films on Channel Four and its sister station Film Four.

Their key successes in the film industry is due to many important factors and conventions.For instance they invest into many of their films including other filmakers making them have access to a lot of facilties and equipment and they also backed by their parent company.They have a wide range of themes that are set throughout their films such as Depression and deprived and poverty.They have lots of connections to other companies to help develop the films they make and exhibit them out onto other channels.They use a lot of good cmaerawork and angles to show a particular mmode or setting to give the films a certain feeling in the atmosphere.The are also widely known for many good films so it helps boost their reputation and helps them to become more known nad maybe one day they may become mainstream.

 From all the new people they have decided to hire for roles in directing and actors they have helped many people luanch a career of filmmaking due to this.They have helped launch the career of Alex Garland who was the director of the Ex-machina which won over serval awards.They have made a film called 'Attack of the Block' which helped start John Boyega's career which later on in his career in 2013 he was hired to be in the 'Star wars the force awakens' which is known as one of the most selling films of all time.This shows that they have a crtical role in the film industry making unkown actors turn into mainstream actors for the latest blockbuster films of all time.

Production Log - Week 3

This week we went out and researched about the commissioner Film Four is that they product films for their parent company called channel 4, and what I also learnt is that that Film four distributes the films that film four productions make and channel 4 exhibits the films on tv to show to people. We learnt also how channel four owns a large amount of the stock of Film Four and they help to invest a lot to their films and they help market them. This will impact our production of our film by us keeping the same themes and feel of Film Fours films that are made for BSR which have very dark and gritty themes. It will also impact our production by us staying with in the Uk and filming in run down areas that fit the genre and themes of BSR films.

What we have learnt about sound in BSR films is that there is a lot of silence within the film and there's usually a lot of diegetic dialogue happening within the film and the world of the diagesis.The sounds are also very depressing and not very upbeat and happy. This will impact our production because I will incorporate this into my own work for instance I will add very realistic and depressing sounds to make the film feel very true to people living this style of life, I will also make it to give and accurate depict of their life too. I will use music that will represent this genre and style of BSR films and it will hopefully be used for the majority of our opening sequence.

I will use silence just like how Film Four has used it to give the sense of powerful emotion and give a sense of realism too as you wouldn't hear music playing in the same situation in real life. The silence of a BSR film also gives more character development to the characters as it focus on there facial expressions and their emotions and it also eventually leads to them talking making the audience focusing on their dialogue conveying a more powerful scene for them to watch.

The key theme that is in the film called This is England is clearly Racism.

It is denoted when a little boy who has a skin head about 11years old walks into a shop and asks for a drink but is rejected by the shop owner or worker and repeatedly shoats out racist words towards him.The shop owner is infurioated by this andproceeds to chase him until a bunch of older skin heads enter the shop and threaten him and steals items within the shop and they are passive aggresive at first but become more hostile as the scene plays out.

The verbable language used in this is very strong and is very sensitive to asian people and is considered very offensive and this is a clear representation of how London was like in the 1990's - 2000's when racism was still a thing,Some of the men that entered the shop even had weapons such as a machete and threatened to attack the man if he did anything to stop them all just because of his skin colour and social background.This may of never happened if the guy was white,it also may of never of happened if the owner gave the boy the beer,but this is very unlikely because the men that ransacked the shop all were conviently there with some weapons so it was more of a set up and that particular shop was more of a target because of his skin colour and they may of considered him as an easy target because they may think hes weaker due to his different skin colour.

The way I may incorperate this into my film is by the use of psyical threats and maybe hate language towards a particular race or social background and maybe even having people that are different races have lower social class and roles to one race to show superiority and inferiourity within the film and show how people can really be like towards each other.

The key theme that is in the film called Nil by mouth is Domestic abuse.

It is denoted when a man and a women both are parents and they are in a room talking and it quickly escalates into an argument when the man begins to get very angry and aggressive towards the woman and she retalliates back in response and then he punches her to the ground and begins to kick her repeatedly while shes on the floor in pain and suffering and crying.

The language and communication throughout this is very aggresiive and shows a clear anger or hatred towards bothsides and the man clearly has the domincance due to his overwhleming stress and vocal power while the women struggles to voive her emotions not olny that but the mans psyhical appearance is a lot more meanacing than the womens and hes a lot bigger and has more power to cause more damage,and this is evivdently shown when he knocks her to the ground and the audience cant see her on the ground and only the man causing an enigma code and making the audience ask questions on how hurt is she what did he do,and neither do we see his kicks at her either making the person watching create it in the mind mkaing it more scary while instead of showing it.

The way I would incorporate this into my own BRS film would be if a a couple were having relationship issues due to the male having stress from drug deals and he proceeds to punch and abuse his partner to release pain and anger.

The key theme that is in the film called Adulthood is Violence.

It is denoted when person A enters a house which seems be owned by gangs and they are verbally aggressive towards him and called him mild racist names and one has a knife in his hand, but later on person A pulls out a gun an threatens them and another person enters the scene, then person A kicks down the other person with a gun and injures him and it is unknown how badly but it looked very painful.

The way the theme was presented was very intense because at the start of the clip it was fairly calm but as it goes on you can see and fell the tension between the men increase and it gets to the point where the hatred is full focus and the audience doesn't pay attention to anything else due to the hand gestures and facial expressions of the characters also breathe in new life to the performance as it makes the scene much more believable and real for the audience to watch, the props such as the gun that was used also adds a clear vivid view as it shows that one simple object as the gun can ultimately end your life and when the gun is pointed at the man on the table his entire power dominance has vanished because he's scared to death because of the gun pointed at him.

The way I would incorporate thins into my film would be the use of menacing weapons such as knifes and even bats or heavy duty tools to make a more gritty and diverse threat instead of the typical gun that most films would use now.

The key theme that is in this film called Looking for eric is suicidal mental illness.

It is denoted when Eric who is just and average man who has issues with his family is speaking to Cantona,so right away the audience can tell something is weird as someone who is famous is just chilling and hanging around a guy who is barely known. The film is also based around Eric having mental issues and wanting to commit suicide, representing him having difficulties in his personal life


The way the theme was presented was fairly sad and depressing as Eric is literally just talking to a man that isn't there and he has a bond with him and, no-one around him understands him as its all created in his mind, and his idol Cantona is only hope and saviour as if his mind hadn't have played tricks on Eric then he would of most likely would have committed suicide, this can show how lonely depressed he is and his mind literally goes so far to an extent to create a fictional character, which makes this film touching to some who get emotional easily, You can tell he's suffering too by the use of his language and intellect as he appears not to be educated as good as others and his facial expressions shows his sadness only until Cantona appears making him happy and cheerful.

The way I would incorporate this into my film is by a person who has a severely bad and miserable life who could have a disability that affects them to an extent where they feel like they can not cope with it.

The key theme in the film called Fish tank is parenthood.

It is denoted when The girl that is the main protagonist in this film is arguing with literally everyone and appears to have anger issues or a mental trauma and she particularly argues with her mother who literally doesn't care about her one bit and is considered a bad parent so the girl has suffered with a bad childhood and parenthood.

The way the theme was presented was very intense and dramatic between the characters as the girl argues constantly between everyone and this can all lead and point to her mother being bad, for instance she may have treated the girl very bad when she was young and her bad habits may have been influenced on her and now she's carrying those habits to the people she hangs around such as the neighbours or the girls that were dancing, The area where she lives can also influence her behaviour as it seems very run down and is in need of repair and regeneration which and signify a sense of depression between them and the mother may want a better life but she cant provide it therefor leading to her having mood swings and sadness.

The way I would incorporate this into my film is by using dramatic and intense fights and sequences that would make the audience feel intense, which would make the film much more alive and affective.

Denoted here is two people looking at each other in the dark.

 

Here we can clearly see a mid shot of two people both of them being black talking to each other and both of them look like they are smiling and  seem to be getting along ,while the lighting in this shot is particularly dark which is a low-key lighting, the only lighting seen in this shot is background lights from what appears to be houses in the distance or street lights

 

What this connotes is that this film fits well with the genre of the BSR films due to its dark and realistic lighting and setting as usually in BSR films there's usually a high amount of dark luminous scenes to maybe show the characters feelings or emotions and maybe to even foreshadow or portray their future as a dark setting, the lighting can also represent the relationships between these two characters as it could show both of their troubled pasts of being together but the light in the background could be a signal of hope just like a religious symbol. This relates to BSR films due to the lighting portraying a realistic insight of what real life can be like making them both link to each other.

 

How the Colour of a film is represented in a BSR (1:45)

Here we can clearly see a long angle mid shot of a person on the ground that appears to be hurt and someone running over him in some pebbled road that fancy houses would have and in the background we can see a car that is driving in front of a house and the situation that is taking place is all set at night. The colour used is very dull bland and not very saturated as it fits well to the BSR genre.

What this connotes is that the film is very true to the BSR films because the colour and texture of all the props and assets used in the production and post production of the film fits to the dark gritty feel of the BSR as ,BSR's are known to have a fairly dark deep story for example drug use and the story for this film is not much different. The colour can signify the depression that happens throughout the film because there are people hurt as we can see in the example above and it can show the true meaning of what life is like instead of the Hollywood glorified films that only show false depictions a lot of the time. It also clearly shows how everyone is fighting for their survival and how dark and grim it can be for instance people could be stabbing, punching and this all can lead to the victim up above. This depicts the representation of BSR characters because a lot of characters in the films under this genre all have the same conventions that are mention here, fighting even killing and trying to make al living.

Denoted here is a man running down a path towards a bunch of police cars

 

Here we can see a man who is wearing a hoddie and jeans running down a pathway that looks to be of a wealthy house such as a mansion and on the pathway is a bunch of police vehicles such as cars and ambulances and police officers waiting there. The lighting is very dark once again as tis set at night outside and the only visible lights are coming from what appears to be the house as the path is all laminated and the flashing lights from the police cars and ambulances.

 

What this connotes is that the film is true to the BSR genre again because it has clear conventions from the BSR films such as the era that this film is set in.This film is set during modern times and we know that it is set during modern times because we can see the abundance of technology being used such as the cars and the flashing lights because not that long ago has these uses of technology have been used. We also know that this isn't set in the far future because mostly likely at that point would we have developed far better and more efficient ways of transportation and technology so using outdated equipment would be impractical. What also hints at the era is the clothing some people wearing in this shot, such as the man running as seen above, he is wearing a hoddie and some jeans which all link and relate to the era of today as a lot of gangsters wear this type of clothing making it another hint of it being set in the modern era. This links to BSR films because a lot of BSR films are set during the modern era to show what life is li9ke today but there are also some exceptions.

The film I chose to use for this mise-en-scène analysis was Kidulthood (Stylised as KidUlthood) more specifically I chose the clip of its ending as there was so much to analyze as so much was going on within this single sequence and I had a clear idea for representation of some of the categories of PLACE within mise-en-scène from my first viewing of the scene.

Actors 

 
Katie who killed herself very early on into the film had a strong family, the photo above shows Katie's brother who seeks revenge from her death note shown in the photo (below), he does this in a very convincing fashion from his actions the emotion he uses is very realistic and he is very distraught and crying when he finds one of her sisters bully's and dwells over the fact that Sam the trigger that led Katie to kill herself barely cares or even remembers.

The mise-en-scène that is done here through acting is the convincing performance from Katie's brother making this story much more believable as he had reacted the way someone in reality would react after finding one of your family members persecutors through bullying. This performance further  strengthens this sense of realism we feel almost constantly throughout this film, the performance also reinforces the point that Katie was killed very unjustly and Katie's brother feels like he has to forcefully instate this justice himself as this has not just affected him but everyone who knew Katie, this feeling is what helps the audience further despise this Antagonist and keeps the audiences mind set on the characters roles in the movie. There is also a clear understanding of Katie's brother we know that he is not a completely bad guy from the way he lowers his gun when Trevor says that, "He's not worth it.", however this judgment is severely clouded by the death of his sister and so when Sam starts to act up to get some of his reputation back Katie's brother goes to pull the trigger.

I feel that the mise-en-scène here is done well as we get a very good feeling of how British social realism characters usually behave in this darker genre of film, we see that he is mostly aggressive due to strong themes in this case it was revenge, however, in other films it could be a range of things from depression even to jealousy, even so this gives someone who is new to this genre a clear feel for some of the emotion that could be shown by the actors in such a film. The mise-en-scène here also shows the fallout of events and how things could very easily spiral out of control shown very evidently in the closing scene of the film, however, here all events transpire into one big finale although this could be for a "big ending" as shown in most films, I feel that here it is to further explore this common trait in most British social realism films of this bad ending and how not everything is resolved in the closing sequences. The scene also strenthens the point of these British social realism common traits particularly here we see someone having to embrace this darker side of himself due to the transpring events, the acting proves this as he is not able to fully embrace this darker side after being brought to tears by the final moments of her sisters life and how depressing and sad they must have been, only after a further push by Sam is he brought over the edge and is prepared to kill him, the acting by the actors of both Sam and Katie's brother shows the audience how brutal and harsh the lives of people within British social realism films are.

Production

 

The mise-en-scène in this film has been improved greatly by the production in many different ways, the scene here is where Trife (Trevor) is given the death shot with the baseball bat by Sam (the editing here has also made it much harder for viewers to watch as it seems much more brutal as it has had effects added to it to make it feel truly hard). Also in the scene we see Alisa shocked in the background. The picture that is shown is very dark and a fitting representation of a British social realism film. 

The mise-en-scène in this scene is very strong, firstly regarding the set, this is also well done, although we are in a lower class area the people who live on this set are richer than most in this area this is displayed as off into the distance we see little else but other far neighboring houses and garages. The set more specifically is very open, and that feeling of danger is much more evident as the persecutor Sam is able to attack from anywhere. The props equally have this feeling of danger which is too often present in almost all of these British social realism to illustrate that the lives of the people in this film are almost never not met with threat and are not easy lives to live this is shown through the use of this baseball bat from Sam's perspective we see a threat to his status within this community as he let three young school boys beat him up and rob him. The movie also uses its costumes well showing these roles for all of the characters in the film we also see this slightly sexist outlook, where Alisa is wearing a dress to the party along with most other girls, however, we see that the boys can dress however they want often to maintain this image of masculinity they mainly decide to wear tracksuits. 

This shows the generic conventions of British social realism films as we are easily able to see the general main themes of such movies from abuse of drugs to simple violence, this is all shown through the production of mise-en-scène in the film the props such as the smaller knife and the baseball bat that the people here in this film are not very educated or have little knowledge of what could be the consequences due to their youth or just dangerous or desperate people in general due to the weapons they carry, equally it could just be the film creators way of telling us where these people live is very dangerous and the only way that some people can even start to feel safe is by carrying weapons of their own. This conforms to many of the British social realism trends such as living within a dangerous community or place, the theme of petty crime in general or serious crime to try and survive through poverty and even just wanting a high status within a community which Sam clearly wants this is seen especially when he is confused as to why he wasn’t invited to a party.
 

Colour

 

The image here shows Trife (Trevor) on some steps after being beaten very harshly with a baseball bat he is now very injured and is close to death, it is a very emotional scene and the actors show it by some of the expressions in their faces. 

We see the red colour of blood splattered all over Trevor's face mostly people around Trevor are wearing white clothing, however we see Becky in a pink dress and we also see Moony in a darker tracksuit and Jacket combination and Green is also seen from the surrounding grass and weeds. 

This red colour that usually indicates danger and death usually appears towards the dark climax of a British social realism film or in the dark ending here, similarly it is shown in this darker ending we see Trevor spitting up this blood and having is smeared across his face, this is a regular convention in British social realism movies as this sense of brutality and death is present almost within all movies of this genre with action within the film.
